Lightspeed Retail X-Series (Vend) Apple & Google Wallet Integration Guide

Lightspeed Retail X-Series – formerly known as Vend – can connect with Litecard to give customers a digital loyalty or membership card inside Apple Wallet and Google Wallet.

Lightspeed remains the system managing customers, sales and loyalty activity. Litecard provides the mobile wallet experience: branded passes, barcodes, dynamic fields, unique wallet links and wallet push notifications.

Lightspeed officially describes Vend as Lightspeed Retail X-Series, so this integration applies to existing Vend retailers as well as newer X-Series accounts. Vend is now Lightspeed Retail X-Series.

What does the Litecard and Lightspeed integration do?

The integration turns a Lightspeed customer record into a branded digital loyalty or membership card that customers can store on their phone.

It can enable retailers to:

  • Issue unique Apple Wallet and Google Wallet passes.
  • Display a member name, customer code, tier or loyalty balance.
  • Identify customers in-store using a barcode or member code.
  • Update the wallet pass when customer information changes.
  • Send wallet notifications about rewards, offers and loyalty events.
  • Distribute passes through Klaviyo, Mailchimp, HubSpot, SMS or another CRM.
  • Replace physical loyalty cards without requiring customers to download an app.

How the integration works

1. Create or match the customer in Lightspeed #

When someone joins the loyalty or membership program, the integration finds an existing Lightspeed customer or creates a new one.

The Lightspeed customer record can include:

  • First and last name
  • Email address
  • Mobile number
  • Customer code
  • Customer group
  • Loyalty status
  • Communication preferences
  • Custom fields

Lightspeed’s customer API specifically defines customer_code as the code used for claiming loyalty. This makes it a strong identifier for connecting the customer’s Lightspeed profile with their Litecard pass. Lightspeed Customer API.

2. Create the customer’s unique wallet pass #

Litecard creates an individual pass linked to that customer.

Each customer receives:

  • A unique Apple Wallet link
  • A unique Google Wallet link
  • A unique QR code for desktop users
  • A Litecard card ID
  • A barcode or member code linked to the Lightspeed customer

These links should never be shared between customers. Each pass represents one specific customer profile.

3. Deliver the wallet pass #

The unique links can be inserted into:

  • Welcome emails
  • Welcome SMS messages
  • Loyalty signup confirmation pages
  • Klaviyo flows
  • Mailchimp journeys
  • HubSpot workflows
  • Ecommerce customer accounts
  • Litecard-hosted signup forms

Desktop users can scan their personal QR code with their phone and then select Apple Wallet or Google Wallet.

4. Identify the customer at checkout #

At the point of sale, the customer presents their wallet card.

Where the retailer’s barcode scanner supports scanning mobile screens, staff can scan the barcode to retrieve the member identifier. The Lightspeed customer code can also be entered or searched manually as a fallback.

Scanner compatibility #

Barcode behaviour depends on the retailer’s scanner, operating system and Lightspeed setup.

Before launch, test:

  • Whether the scanner can read phone screens.
  • The chosen barcode format.
  • Screen brightness and scanning distance.
  • Apple and Android devices.
  • Customer-code search and manual entry.
  • Each active store and register configuration.

A supported linear barcode is generally preferable when existing retail scanners cannot reliably read QR codes. Manual customer-code entry should remain available.

Do not position NFC tap as supported unless the retailer has compatible NFC hardware and a separately tested workflow.

Updating loyalty balances and customer information

Lightspeed supports customer and sale events that can be used to trigger updates to external platforms. Available webhook types include sale.update and customer.update. Lightspeed X-Series webhooks.

A typical update journey is:

  1. A customer completes a purchase.
  2. Lightspeed records the sale.
  3. Litecard or the integration layer retrieves the updated customer information.
  4. The wallet pass is updated.
  5. The customer can receive a wallet notification.

The pass could display:

  • Current loyalty balance
  • Membership tier
  • Available rewards
  • Number of active offers
  • Member status
  • Expiry date
  • Spend-to-next-tier progress

Lightspeed notes that webhooks should not be treated as guaranteed delivery, so production integrations should also use scheduled reconciliation or polling to keep records aligned. Lightspeed webhook guidance.

Loyalty redemption

Litecard can display the customer’s loyalty balance and make rewards easier to discover, but Lightspeed should remain responsible for the actual loyalty redemption transaction.

Lightspeed’s loyalty documentation states that reducing a customer’s loyalty balance happens through applying loyalty as a payment to a sale. Lightspeed Loyalty 101.

This means:

  • Litecard displays the wallet experience.
  • Lightspeed controls the sale and loyalty payment.
  • The integration keeps the displayed balance aligned.
